I love it when the 4th of July lands on a Friday or a Monday. It’s an incentive to plan a mini getaway and take advantage of a long holiday weekend. This year, my husband and I decided to cross the border to Toronto to check off a bucket list I’d had since discovering the show “Schitt’s Creek.”
For those unfamiliar, “Schitt’s Creek” is a Canadian TV show created by the father-son ensemble Eugene Levy and Dan Levy. It follows the Rose family, who lost all their fortune and had to move to a small town called “Schitt’s Creek,” which Eugene’s character, Johnny Rose, bought as a joke. The show gained popularity in the United States when Netflix started streaming it. This well-written show became my instant favorite.

As it turns out, most of the locations were filmed in a town called Goodwood, just an hour outside Toronto. There are 4 other locations not in Goodwood. That’s why I highly recommend renting a car and making a day trip out of it. Armed with my Simply the Best tote bag, we started our Schitty Day Trip.

Welcome to Schitt’s Creek!
Our first stop is the Hockley Motel aka the Rosebud Motel, in Mono, which is about an hour away northeast of Toronto. This is the motel where the Roses stayed while trying to get back on their feet. To our surprise, the motel decked the building with the Rosebud Motel sign similar to the show. I don’t know if it’s legit info, but I read a Facebook post that the owners are planning to turn it into an Airbnb.

Next, we headed east to Goodwood, another hour drive from Mono. This is where we spent most of our day, since most of the exterior scenes were shot in Goodwood. Coming south on Front Street, approaching 47 Highway and Concession 3 Road, here’s the order of all the locations we saw:

As we were walking at the intersection where you see Bob’s Garage, Cafe Tropical, and Rose Apothecary, we saw a guy wearing a shirt that says “Schitty Tour Guide” conversing with other fans. I thought they hired him as a personal tour guide, but as it turns out, he’s a local who also loves the show and welcomes Schittheads like us.

Cameron, aka the Schitty Tour Guide, was very friendly and had lots of trivia about the show. If you have TikTok, give him a follow. His handle is @schitthead4.
We decided to take a break from the heat and ate lunch at Annina’s Bakeshop, which is right across the street from Bob’s Garage and Rose Apothecary. I read a blog that they handled the cast and crew’s catering when they filmed in Goodwood. The sandwich was hefty and flavorful. We were especially looking forward to their butter tart. From what we read, it’s a Canadian pastry and a must-try in Toronto. I’m happy to share that Annina’s butter tart was perfect. The crust and filling had a nice consistency to them.
Fruit wine, anyone?!
After a few more photo ops, we headed back south to Toronto. On the way back, we stopped at Applewood Farms, which was used as the backdrop for Herb Ertlinger Winery. It was towards the end of strawberry-picking season when we arrived, but since we were unable to take them back to LA, we bought some sparkling honey mocktails called Belicious, and it was delicious.

The next stop was Blouse Barn, which is Crock-A-Doodle in Unionville. Due to the construction on Main Street, we couldn’t get a better picture of the neighboring shops.

The Blouse Barn & Ted’s Vet Clinic
Unfortunately, we hit a snag on our way to Ted Mullens’ vet office/home. We had to backtrack to Whitchurch-Stouffville on Main Street and finally found the Thicketwood Veterinary Hospital.

We were delighted that we weren’t the only ones doing a self-guided tour. There were other Schittheads from other parts of the world immersing themselves, specifically in Goodwood. I thought we traveled the furthest, but a mom-and-daughter team flew from London.
Tips & Takeaways
Should you decide to take a day trip to the fictional town of Schitt’s Creek, here are my tips:
- Most of the locations are residences or privately owned businesses not open to the public. Please be mindful when taking your souvenir shots. If you see the Schitty Tour Guide, he’ll specifically tell you how to take photos and will even take some photos of you.
- Please support the local business when you visit. Goodwood Mercantile sells Schitt’s Creek merch made in Canada by local artists.
- Don’t miss out on the funny little additions to commemorate the show, like a photo of Darlene, Tyla’s cousin, next to Rose Apothecary/Goodwood Mercantile; a recreated Welcome to Schitt’s Creek sign (see the featured image above); the plunger inside Rose Apothecary/Goodwood Mercantile; and a newspaper article posted outside Bob’s Garage about Goodwood.
- This is the first time I used ChatGPT to plan our mini vacation. If you use ChatGPT to plan your itinerary, be sure to triple-check its results. That’s how we ended up having to backtrack to Ted’s vet clinic, as it gave us two different addresses.
I hope this blurb inspires you to wander or keep wandering, friends!
